grin & bear

My wife taught our dog how to smile.  At first, we didn't encourage this, because we thought it was a sign of aggression that he bared his teeth.  But the rest of his body language is submissive, and this "smile" is not ever accompanied with growling or snapping.  It's really very funny, and I caught this picture with only one try.

Please forgive the nakedness of this pup, but his collar was bothering him, so we let him romp around the house without it.  Normally, our canine and feline housemates are properly clothed.  With a collar... not those silly costumes that people use to completely rob their pet's dignity.

He does have very white teeth; doesn't he?  The pup is a year and-a-half now.  He's part Dachshund, and part Whatchamicallit.  I have pics here of when he was just ten weeks old.  He has gained three whole pounds since then.  I wonder... have I ever told you what we decided to name him?  His name is Bear.

This guy is definitely not an alpha, but he's a wonderful little companion.  I like the way he sits with us (or on us) to watch a movie at home.

Say cheese...

Awwww...(said in my most "I-love-the-way-he-looks" voice.) He is a cutie pie. I hadn't seen his puppy photos, so I traveled back via your link to look at him. And... "Awwwww" he was a cute puppy, too!!
I would love to know how your wife taught him to smile. Congratulations to her.
We had a sweet chocolate lab named Bear. I told a friend what we had named him (this was several years ago) and he looked at me and smiled and said, "I'm gonna get a bear and name him 'Dog.' "
I hope your Bear is as sweet as ours was. I loved that sweet dog!!
Bear hugs to him from Jackie!!

He's a sentimental sap, Imac. We love him.

Mr. Dave, he fits well with my family. My daughter has even brought him to work. ...That wouldn't work for me, though.

No Steve, I will not. But you are welcome to visit again, and I encourage you to observe the conversational nature of the other visitors.

Bear's smiles are a new trick, Jackie. Last night, I went home, and couldn't get him to do it for me. But when I took this shot last Friday, he was smiling on command for Mrs. Craver. I even tried to mimic her voice, but it didn't work for me. I'll bet our "Bears" make better pets than your friend's "Dog."

Bear hugs... love it!

hehehe I love your comment to steve, whoever he is!
Bear is a lovely example of a family dog. Cuddly, brown and friendly. And he loves movies too. Brilliant.

We're still working on it, George. Sometimes he smiles, and sometimes he doesn't.

Oh I take names very seriously, Lime. The family that he came from wanted to call him "Beau." It sounds too much like "no."

Cuddly is a good word for our dog, Shammy. When I read your comment, I thought how amusing it would be to catch him watching a movie by himself.

I like dogs, but the low maintenance of cats is very appealing to me Betty. Have you heard about the theology of dogs & cats? The dog says, "You feed me, shelter me, take care of me... you must be a god." A cat says, "You do all these things for me... I must be a god."

Well Pearl, that's Bear for ya. That's how he rolls.

I miss seeing Martin's blogs Shammy. Combe Martin looks great for long walks. I'm glad you brought pictures from your trip.

He has a funny personality, Chris. But yes, all of our pets are good natured, and we love them.
