How do you identify bugs? This one was out in front of the house. I looked it up at bugguide.net.

Awesome shot Craver!! I saw something that looks just like that the other night. It was about an inch long. Too dark to take a nice picture though.
I've used buguide. Just ordered Kauffmann's North American Insect Field Guide. Used one this summer and liked it.

It was a blessing to see this thing in bright sunlight -- at about 2PM. This one was the same size as the one you saw. According to the link I provided Leeloo's mum, the range of these bugs goes "as far NE as southern New Brunswick," so you are on the very edge of their territory.
Isn't that bug guide wonderful Gaelyn? It was unbelievably easy to use, and so practical for an inquisitive non-expert such as myself.

The Bug Guide is great, I agree. This is one ugly bug, though. (I know, if I can't say something nice then I shouldn't say anything at all.)

darn. i'm sorry your day is so poopy. when i look up a bug i usually go to the state website for assistance.
One of my kids found a dead fly on a box and brought it to my attention this morning, so that I might photograph it Mommanator. And yes, that cheers me up.
Ninja bugs are a surprising find any time, Joan. My whole family (pets included) is still intact, so the assassin must have had another target in mind. The very fact that I was able to take notice and observe it closely, would indicate that I was never in harm's way, because a ninja... er, "assassin" would never let itself be seen by the intended victim.
I've missed your visits Lime; you sure made up for it today!! State sites offer good tools for bugs and plants and such. I used to have that bookmarked, then lost it. Thanks for the reminder!
Craver: I use that site also but sometimes there are too many bugs to look through. Very nice photos.

Hey Mr. Fishing Guy, you know what else I could use? A fish identifier! I like the tank at Bass Pro Shops, that shows the live fish inside, but also gives information on the side.
Hi Carletta! We all have our ups and downs, and I know that my problems would seem small to another, but scummy to me is a when my area of responsibility exceeds my capabilities, and the only thing that seems to be in bloom is the evil of mens' hearts. I wore my angry eyebrows for part of the day, but they're back in the box now.
QW, I didn't check to see what kind of damage they cause, since this was the only one. But as I said to Joan, if these are assassins, maybe the rest are in hiding. ;-)
