li'l nippers

A certain Downy Woodpecker was so proud of his red nape, that he turned around for the camera, "showing his good side." That was nice of him. He wasn't drumming on this little tree, and maybe even picking at that white stuff that looks like frost.

.

I went back after work for a closer look at the stuff resembling frost, because it was too warm yet for that. And here, if you get up real close, you will see that these are little flying things. They hatch from the white cocoons or eggs or whatever. There are lots and lots of those egg thingies on this tree. Sorry, but I don't have them identified yet. Mmmm... good eatin'! (If you're a woodpecker, that is.)

Beautiful woodpecker and bug (I don't really know what they are) shot! Do woodpeckers really eat those bugs?

Craver: Cool capture of the Downy and the bugs.
BTW: I had put the wrong header up and changed it.

Not into bug eggs. But love Woody the woodpecker.

Hey, did you hear of the plague of Stink Bugs we have here in Maryland. these little critters are such a menace, and they have nobody who wants to eat them. I fear next year we shall be overrun, unless they find some way to control them.

A friend of ours saw them devour a whole pumpkin.

Looks like some kind of fly larvae Craver. A great feast for the woodpecker.

Love the little downies..I have them at my feeders...Thank you for letting me know about Joan's problem with my blog. I removed many widgets and changed to a simpler format this week and she still can't see it.. Hmm.. I had that problem with one blog and had to reset my modem because it was blocked that server. I don't know what to say..I did leave her a message...thank you so much....Michelle

Cicadas? Yes Chris, I think so too, except that these are smaller than a grain of rice.

The woodpecker seemed to be very content with this meal Rachel Grace.

I figured you would, Fishing Guy. The butterfly stands out very nicely from the background of leaves.

Well, I don't want to eat them either, Sandman. I'm sure they can be made more enticing if you find other ways to prepare them. Perhaps rolled in batter and deep fried... stink bug kabobs... pureed as an energy drink... some clever person might even get rich off of a stink bug weight loss diet. How's that for a new fad?

I think you're right, Gaelyn. I hope he comes back for more "happiness."

There are still a lot of larvae on the tree Joan. I think we could use a few more birds.

Thank you Michelle for responding and for helping our friend Joan. I hope the fix does not require a radical change, because your blog has a nice look to it.

You're funny Craver!

I was thinking that these little guys must be tasty to some other little bit bigger guys, who like to eat them for some unknown reason. And if there are, then these creatures will be in Asia most likely.

Does that make any sense?

Sandman, I thought it did, but you lost me at Asia.

I hope the bird enjoys this kind of food George. I hope he brings his friends, too.

Heh heh. EG, do you suppose this is the dessert or main course?

Thanks Imac. I'm glad I had the camera with me.

Who knows Lime? Maybe these larvae aren't half bad? Try one first.
