Header Challenge: Contrast

January 30, 2013

Katney picked this week's theme.  I like it a lot.  It was not too difficult to find some good contrasts in the archives.  Check out my  pals for their interpretations on the theme of contrast: Fishing  Guy, Katney, Imac and Lew.

This picture of my grandson is one of my favorites.  He has grown so much since then!

Here's my older son entertaining his nephew.

While retaining the mids, we have good contrasts from an off-camera flash during a baptism.  I wanted to make sure I stopped the motion and some of these pics "froze" the dripping water.

Speaking of dripping water, I took this one after a chilly rain in October.

How about a naturally occurring contrast of these snow and ice crystals on my windshield?

This picture doesn't look like it belongs, does it?  We might call it a philosophical contrast.  My daughter is cuddling with a puppy, but notice that her clothing has a pattern of the o'l skull and crossbones.  Maybe it's not an optical contrast per se, but the paradox of a nurturing, cuddly pirate girl strikes me as a contrast in the realm of ideas.

The cool dude in this week's header is my younger son.  He was standing against an off white wall and wearing a white crew neck tee shirt.  Using flash, I adjusted the settings to wash out all the middle tones.  Later, the shadows were boosted to exaggerate the contrasts.

Craver: Nicely done. Everyone certainly went different directions with this theme.

Great things you did with the contrasts in light with these images. The pirate nurturer is a good one, too. The theme, chosen in a moment of "oh, it's really my turn!!??" is open for lots of interpretations. I haven't seen the others yet.

Hi Craver,
Love the snowflake! I haven't even tried to get a snowflake this year. This is a wonderful one.
My Granddaughter has a skull and cross bone design on a tee. It's in pastel colored sparkles. I like your thoughts to 'cuddly pirate girl'.
Uh, hope you and your son take it as a compliment - he looks like a rock star in this shot. :)

Nice work with the flash in your header! Love the effect of just the face without background details. Super job with the ice crystals! And the young ones do not learn until later in life the meaning of lots of symbols that appear in their books, on TV (and on clothes).

I like your contrast photos. The philosophical contrast of your daughter cuddling the puppy and her top is neat. I also like the ice and snowflakes on the windshield.

Love the Baptism one, too...loving the water.
Hadn't noticed the contrast of the clothing with the sweet puppy...but so glad you pointed the contrast out. Clever guy, you are.
