jarred nerves

When you see an old jar, do you ever wonder what's inside? I haven't thought much about such things, and I have never been afraid of the mysteries inside. Until now.

.

I took two of the kids to the store last night to buy Mom's Christmas present. They had done some figuring earlier and Daughter put some coins in Son's coat pocket, cause he might be short at the register. Sure enough, after he was rung up, he needed those extra coins... but didn't realize until that moment, which pocket she had stashed his loan. Instead of forking over his money expeditiously, he began a speech lamenting her choice of pocket.

.

You still with me? Okay, here goes. He wasn't moving fast enough for me, so I put my own hand in his coat pocket. That was a mistake. I wish I could have seen the expression on my face from the cashier's perspective. I pulled my hand back out of the pocket without the coins. Imagine emptying a package of hot cocoa mix, plus chocolate chips, plus sand into a cloth pocket. What possesses a child to do such a thing?

.

Let's say that I am wiser today, with a healthier fear of the unknown.

An odd combination, but I'll agree with stacy - at least it was dry food stuff. A scarier place to put your hand? Under the front seat of your car, in the dark corner where you dropped your coin and have to "feel" for it.

Even worse? Forgetting to check the little boy pockets before throwing the jacket into the wash. Yeah. I've been there and it's not pretty!!

As a youngster, I frequently collect nuts, bolts and washers in my pockets. That caused holes and residual rust, so it was inconceivable for me to put anything edible in there without a good wrapper.

Of course, as a parent, things have changed. Coat pockets have been used to discreetly hide tissues we use for runny noses and baby spit-ups.

Today, my kids can wipe their own noses, so my coat pocket is clean and dry. I like to use it when Mrs. Craver and I go walking outside on a cool day; she slips her hand in mine, and we keep them warm in my coat's side pocket.

Oh, love that picture of the secret contents of a child's pocket!

I hope you like the clay jar, too. I waited 'till night to take that picture, so the sunlight wouldn't soften the contrasts. Passersby made fun of me 'cause it's on the bottom shelf and I was sitting on the floor to take the shot.

haha. That reminds me of the evangelical professor- if I'm not mistaken George Elton Ladd or some evangelical professor- and well known like him, who used to pull a sandwich out of his pocket right during a class he was teaching- and eat it!

My daughter and her beau were here last night doing laundry as they were still out of power at their house. They were sharing some of the things their roommate puts in his pockets and fails to remove prior to laundering. Unfortunately they have ruined some of my kids' clothes, but I don't think I ever have dared reach into pockets of any of my family members. Very scary. Well, except Ornery's when I reach in for warmth...TM
