Sometimes the process of capturing a photo is as much fun to show as the final product. That's the case with the ant I trapped. I used a strand of copper wire to loop over its abdomen, and then taped the wire down to hold this ant in place. The light was too strong from my flashlight, so I covered it with tissue and tape. The camera was on a tripod, and I enlarged the live image in the viewfinder to manually set the focus. Then, I released this ant back to the peonies, where it was working to open up the buds.

The bees have never bothered me while I hovered around them taking pictures. They usually let me get real close, too. It's easy... just no sudden moves. The original photo from my header is one of three displayed on the wall of my office.

Love your bee! I really like when you get so close you can see the grains of pollen. Thanks for posting the how-to behind the scenes. Neat to see the lengths you'll go to to get that shot. :)
I love using my macro setting when I am out and about on a hike. I have lots of bees--could have searched out several, but none would have measured up to this one.
Telling an ant to sit still is not much more effective as telling a 1 year old kid. I like your capture of the taking of the picture! And the bee is exquisite!

You did a lot of work to get the picture. I like macro photography and did a lot of it several years ago.
