thunder days

[Full Thunder Moon - July 3, 2012]
Tuesday night we saw the Full Thunder Moon.  There is a special name for the full moon of every month.  July's is also called the "Full Buck Moon" because this is around the time that a bucks antlers start to show.  The former designation is on account of the typical frequency of thunderstorms in this season.

[fireworks - July 4, 2012]
The weather has not exactly corresponded to the almanac's predictions, but we had plenty of thunder on Wednesday night in the form of fireworks.  It was said that many shows had to be cancelled on account of drought, but I went to my usual spot on Independence Day at 9PM and hung out for half-an-hour, which was long enough to catch a few nice bursts and half-a-dozen mosquito bites.

We are going to experience another day of record heat.  I wonder how that will affect the folks who usually come out to our food pantry on Thursday night.  The day was named for Thor, the Norse god of thunder.  (Those of you who know me, know that my "cravings" line up with authentic, biblical Christianity, and that I don't buy into any other religions.  But I still enjoyed the movies with this superhero.)  In the movie of the same name, the Thor character learns to put others before himself, and that's what a handful of food pantry volunteers will be doing tonight, as they leave their nicely air-conditioned homes to serve folks in our community.

Hmmm. I didn't know that about the moon. I love learning new tidbits like that!! Thanks for stopping by my place and saying hello. I like that you let me know your perspective - it helps to hone my skills. Thanks!!!

I saw this familiar face on the Skywatch linky.... :)
Terrific shots of the fireworks and your moon shot is should I say out of this world. Looks like a textbook illustration. What a great job.
The little buck that came nibbling in my yard this week still had his velvet.

Thank you for the birthday wishes, Jackie. I decided not to take my birthday off, but I'll be working through the day. My boss (an excellent baker) makes a cake for each person in our department on their birthday. I may destroy all diets and bring a tub of vanilla ice cream to the office on Wednesday.

Thank you, Michigan Kim. I'm glad you dropped by. The computer acted strange when I tried to leave a comment, so I wasn't sure it got through to you until now.

Danielle, I like that you asked for opinions. It will be interesting to see how people respond. Cheers.

Ah, Carletta! I took several shots of that moon, and couldn't figure out how to make the color look right, so I finally took the color out altogether. I'm glad you like it.

"Boom" as in thunder? Well Boom & Gary, I look forward to visiting your blog. That is one gorgeous dog, by the way!

I learned something new--that the full moon has a different name in each month...cool!

The food pantry sounds like a wonderful ministry to those in need.

Thunderstorms fascinate me, Gattina. A distant rumble is as reassuring to me as a kitten's purring, and I love to hear fat raindrops steadily bouncing off the roof. But then, you've got those heart-stopping concussions that sound like the ear-piercing crackle is close enough to crisp the hair on your arms! As much as I love the thunder, those have made me jump on more than one occasion.

What do you find scary about the storms?

Oh my wife and I are über-excited to serve through the food pantry, Pat. It is a thrill to see how God uses that ministry to connect with our community.

i got a picture of "pre-thunder." would that make it a rumbly moon?

Thanks for visiting, Spare Parts & Pics. The weatherman gave us a reprieve from last week's scorching misery.

I'm glad you liked that moon shot, Betty. It's fun to learn new things from the web.

I had been working on getting healthier, Imac. But, to be honest, last week was so blistery hot that I ate what I felt like, and stayed inside to watch DVDs while enjoying cold suds.

That's what I heard from Imac, Dr. Rachel. My poor lawn is parched and could use some of that water. Couldn't we exchange some our blue sky for a few buckets of your rain? ;-)

Thanks CameraGirl. I created that composite on my little netbook, because it would have taken longer if I waited to use something more conventional. I'm glad I didn't wait.

Sure, that works Lime. Boom Boom will give you amazing detail if you use a tripod, and then use the timer to avoid camera shake, but I love how you framed your moon pic through the silhouetted leaves. That was a nice way to compose your shot.
