black & white vs color

black & white vs color

August 13, 2014

This week's challenge selection is black & white vs color by Fishing Guy.  Check out my pals for their interpretations on this theme: Fishing Guy, Katney, Imac, Lew, and Christine Anne.

I'm glad this theme was chosen.  I have been interested in doing more with black & white, but just haven't gotten around to it.  I like some things better in B&W and other I like some things better in color.

This vibrant, brilliant color is all natural, but the B&W shows more of the texture, don't you think?

But here, I the Japanese Maple has been robbed of a major distinctive...

There it is! The distinctive color of my Japanese Maple.

I like how Bear's character is "colored" by switching to B&W.

But I also like this one for examining the light sources: a picture window in back, the bluish hue of the television on our left, and a white sheet of paper to reflect some fill-light back in the shadows..

Nicely done! I agree b&w works better with some subjects that others - need the contrast to see details. Love the "what is he doing with that camera" expression in Bear's eyes!

Love that header photo!
And, if eyes could talk, Bear's would dominate the conversation.
Sooooo cute. What expressive eyes!
Sending you smiles and warm hugs, my friend,

I like seeing both versions of your photos. I think your photo of Bear is especially good in both versions.

B&W definitely brings out the textures and contrasts, but I think it depends on the subject matter. Photography has come a long way!
