ice bucket challenge

Three people notified me that I had been tagged in the Ice Bucket Challenge that has been making its rounds on Facebook.  If a person is tagged, he is required either to make a $100 donation to ALSA, or douse themselves with a bucket of ice-water (recorded on video), donate a smaller amount and nominate three others for the challenge.  Once nominated, a person has twenty-four hours to complete the task.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease.  This disease attacks a person's nervous system, so that they progressively lose control of your body, while the mind remains intact.  Since this Facebook thing started going around, I have found myself wondering what this is like for the victim, and my heart goes out to them!

The Ice Bucket challenge has resulted in millions of dollars of donations.  As of last August, it was 80 million dollars! This organization is striving to do a lot to provide care and compassion as well as research for a cure.

Most of the research sounds good to me, but unfortunately, they reportedly still fund one project, using ebryonic stem cells.  My convictions regarding the sanctity of human life are such that - for this reason alone - my conscience forbids me from donating money to ALSA.  I will not presume to tell you what to think, but ask that you consider the facts and make your own decision, based on your own value system.

I am not tagging anyone, but I would like to promote a charitable cause. Please consider making a blood donation if you are able.  I made a plasma donation at Heartland Blood Centers.  I love the idea of making a donation that costs me nothing moneywise, but has the potential of saving human lives! Whatever your chosen cause, give--not for reward, but enjoy giving -- just because someone can use your help.

Some people dislike this Facebook ice bucket phenomenon, condemning it as a mindless opportunity for gratuitous selfies. Whatever. Do you remember the 1983 movie Flashdance? There was a moment where a very fit and attractive dancer splashed herself with water.  I have recreated the scene for your viewing pleasure.  The image may not be safe for work (or play, or mealtimes, or... ever).

Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful.

Thank you Richard Hickson, for the mugshots.

Oh, that is awesome. I've read the same things regarding ALS and the embryonic stem cell research. I have a feeling I'm going to be nominated for the ice bucket challenge, and I'll look to a different charity to give to. Hey, also, Jacob says that even though you scored only 15% funny on the "How Funny Are You?" test, he thinks you're hilarious. :)
