I couldn't tell you how I did this, except that I was fiddling with the manual controls, and stumbled upon it. Thankfully, I don't have to rely on my own memory. According to the histogram, I was using aperture priority, spot metered, and then experimented with the camera's onboard record modes. In this shot, I pulled pack a little on saturation and cut way back on contrast. The full automatic moon picture produced the orb as an unrecognizable glow that was uniformly white. Then, I forgot to switch back to area metering, and here's what I got:.
Oops... let's switch that back right now!!

Nice one Craver, I mostly forget to change settings too, guess its the age thing.lol.
Craver: Sometimes we can do the oddest things when on manual mode.
Well Bird Girl, all I can say is that I enjoy playing with the settings and experimenting for different results There is a lot that I forget, and I have to try some things out until I re-discover what I learned earlier. It always knocks my socks off that film photographers get their settings without having to play the games I do.
That's right, Imac. When you add our ages, we've gotta be close to... like fifty years old or something! ;-)
By the way, my wife turns 50 next April. I better plan something good for that day!
That sounds like a philosophical or even theological statement Fishing Guy. I have no desire to become a photographic purist, but I see no reason (especially with digital pics) to fear the manual settings. I'll still probably use program or auto most of the time, but every once in a while, I'd like to be adventurous.
Excellent post and very funny... your moon picture is wonderful and in case you did not see it ;-) the last one has some kind of a problem ;-)
Your moon photo is absolutely fantastic. I was really quite envious until I read that you forgot to change your settings. I've done quite a bit of that.
Wow, that accidental shot of the moon is Awesome!
Yip, that is what happens to me too as the camera is on manual, I see something interesting, turn to take a pic and it is on the wrong settings!! What a waste sometimes!!
thank goodness the camera can remember! funny picture of the singer though!
Oh gee, look at that Chris; you're right. Do you think it could be a ghost sighting?
I'm glad to have cured you of your envy George. Yeah, I have made it a habit of putting my settings back to something more "neutral" before putting it back in the bag, but this time I forgot.
Thanks Gaelyn. It was the best I could do, since the company I was with at the time does not permit the other kind of shooting the moon. ;-)
Joan, my hope is that as time goes on, the manual settings become more familiar, and I can get to a satisfactory recording quicker. There is a film photographer that challenged himself to one click of the camera per day. Only once chance to take one pic per day, and he did this for 90 days. His results went to National Geographic. How's that for inspiration?
The camera remembers? Good thing it doesn't have video or audio. Plus, I better remember to mind my P's and Q's when the cap is off. Thanks for the heads-up, Lime!
Wonderful photo, Craver! Good for you for playing with the manual settings! It pays to be brave. And digital "film" is so inexpensive that experimenting costs next to nothing. :)
